Summertime Ball line-up

There is no doubt that Leona Lewis has become a much bigger star since she won talent show the X Factor. But the fashion-forward singer's choice of outfit at the weekend certainly didn't help rumours of her weight gain.Lewis cut a decidedly dumpy figure in the Ali Baba style jumpsuit she wore to perform at the Capital 95.8 Summertime Ball. With its clingy fabric which billowed at the ankle and strapless bodice, the London-born singer displayed her curvaceous figure as she took to the stage in the black all-in-one.

It was a rare live appearance in the UK for Lewis, 24, who made the switch to the U.S. this year to record and promote an album. She has been so busy with her career, that she has even had to turn down invitations from the President of the United States. The X Factor 2006 winner was put on the guest list for a White House party but was unable to attend because of work commitments. Her spokesman said at the time: 'She really wanted to meet him, but it unfortunately clashed with her schedule to get her second album done.‘Leona has had studio sessions in LA booked for months and has been working day and night getting things perfectly.'The stars were out in force for the ball at London’s Emirates Stadium despite the rain.I Kissed A Girl Singer Katy Perry kicked off the massive charity gig in a revealing red 'Minnie Mouse' polka dot number.

People's Reviews about Capital Radio Summertime Ball

  • It was a long day, and the build-up and constant shelling of sponsor adverts was tedious, but our seats in the stadium (though very far from the stage) were far more comfortable, and had a far improved view than I'd expected (even if the people infront of me were standing, I could see the stage just as well without having to stand myself).
Katy Perry opened, and though she was good, the crowd really wasn't warmed up yet. I think they could have done better by put back some of the spot cream commercials with music videos, or something to be honest.

finally it got into full move back and forth.
There were lots of good bits to pick from, but for me the tourist attractions included The Saturdays (Vanessa resigned to a chair), Kelly Clarkson's set, Dizzee Rascal making a shock appearance during the quite dull and out of place Calvin Harris section early in the afternoon, and obviously the never-aging Lionel Richie!
There were lots of good performers and fine songs(and a few rubbish ones. Did I hear somebody scream Akon?), but I think it's safe to say that Blue took the show at the finish of the night, especially when Lionel Richie joined them on stage for a performance of Easy.
Lots of people had left by this point though, clearing most of our row so we were able to get up and dance to our stupid heart's content.
    One love!
  • wish i was going. Akon, Ciara, KATY PERRY!!!(L), Blue, Iglesias, Kelly Clarkson all soooo good. so jealous of people attending.
  • AWESOME NIGHT!!! KELLY ROCKED!!!!

Introduction To Summertime Ball

The Capital FM Summertime Ball is a mini-festival for the ADD generation. 16 big-name take actions are controlled out in rapid series to do between one and four of their major hits, with stage times thoroughly sticked to. In between, DJs from the radio station cry banalities at the spectators. It's an approach that has profit and drawbackw: on the one hand, it is a extraordinarily fat-free affair; on the other, the vaguely disjointed air means the event never quite feels as though it gets going.
The acts are violently disparate, it seems that selected so there is something for every person. Enrique Iglesias croons to a hyperventilating teenager plucked from the audience; Akon effort to beat the crowd into a party frenzy; Lionel Richie appears at just the right moment to ease the deeply tested patience of the parents in the viewers. (His set turns out to be one of the most rapturously received and genuinely exciting parts of the evening.)
Of course, providing something for everyone unavoidably means there will be dissatisfactions. The Saturdays are frighteningly orange, and as solid to care about live as on record; what, one speculates, is the point of this misguided attempt to recreate Rachel Stevens's career, with even less charisma? Later, James Morrison comes off like a test-tube Chris Martin, screwing up his face as if it is an adequate replacement for real emotion. A newly reformed Blue emerge from beneath the stage, hooded like Stonehenge druids; a spirited All Rise is a welcome blast from the past, but their slight air of desperation makes it difficult to hold out much hope for a successful comeback.
For every dud, though, there is a triumph. Ciara's dance moves are spellbinding. Leona Lewis essays a regal and exultant homecoming; for all that her career seems to exist in a Simon Cowell-induced bubble, her voice remains a wonderfully stately instrument, and Bleeding Love a modern standard. Kelly Clarkson's pared-down Because of You provides a moment of rawness in an evening otherwise geared towards light entertainment.
But the most pleasant surprise comes from JLS, the X Factor runners-up who are proving that a viable career could await them. The hysterical reaction from the teenage girls who constitute the majority of the crowd suggests that the boy-band format may be due a comeback - and as JLS harmonise perfectly on a cover of Umbrella and backflip across the stage, they seem poised to fill this niche.
